Driving on snow- and ice-laden roads can be tricky even for experienced drivers. Follow these important tips to stay safe: 
TIPS FOR DRIVING &nbsp; 1. <a href="http://exchange.aaa.com/safety/driving-advice/winter-driving-tips/#.WkznE_F-l-U" target="_blank">According to AAA</a>, you should accelerate and decelerate slowly, as applying the gas slowly to accelerate helps you best in gaining traction and avoiding skids. It also takes longer to slow down on icy roads, so take extra time to slow down at a stoplight. &nbsp; 2. AAA also recommends driving slowly, because accelerating, stopping and turning all take longer on snow-covered roads, and won't happen as quickly as on dry pavement. &nbsp; 3. AAA also recommends increasing your following distance behind another vehicle from three to four seconds to eight or 10&nbsp;seconds because if you need to stop, this will allow you a safer distance to brake. &nbsp; 4. If you’re approaching a hill, speed up on the flat roadway if you can before you start the incline, according to AAA, and use the momentum to go up the hill. Pressing the gas once on the hill can leave your wheels spinning. In addition, don’t stop while going up a hill&nbsp;as it makes it more difficult to get your car going again from a dead stop. &nbsp; 5. The <a href="https://www.dot.ny.gov/programs/repository/snowicebrochure.pdf" target="_blank">New York State Department of Transportation says</a>&nbsp;in order to avoid skids, brake carefully and gently on snow or ice. If your brakes lock up, ease off the brake pedal and you can also shift into a lower gear when driving at lower speeds. &nbsp; 6. Never follow a snowplow too closely or attempt to pass one. According to the state&nbsp;DOT, the safest place to drive is at least eight car lengths behind a moving plow because it creates a ridge of snow, kicks up a snow cloud and also has a blade that can extend up to 30 inches beyond the truck’s width. &nbsp; 7. NYS DOT also says that bridges and overpasses are likelier to freeze first, so use caution with slippery spots that may develop faster than on regular pavement. &nbsp; TIPS IF YOU GET STUCK &nbsp; 1. According to the NYS DOT, you should stay with your vehicle because it’s your best shelter. Call 911 on your cellphone and report your situation. &nbsp; 2. The state&nbsp;DOT also recommends running the vehicle periodically for heat and light at least once an hour, or once every half-hour in extreme cold. You should also check to make sure the exhaust pipe isn’t clogged. &nbsp; 3. The <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.gov/files/documents/winter-driving-tips.pdf" target="_blank">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends</a> putting markers on the antenna to let other drivers see you, as well as keeping your flashers on. &nbsp; TIPS TO PREPARE FOR YOUR TRIP &nbsp; 1. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fill up your gas tank before the storm — even in a hybrid-electric vehicle. You may use more gas than normal driving in a winter storm. &nbsp; 2. According to Gov.&nbsp;Andrew M. Cuomo’s office, make sure you leave extra time to reach your destination, and make sure you charge your cellphone or two-way radio before leaving for your destination. Plan ahead so you know the directions, and any alternate routes you can use if you encounter hazardous conditions. &nbsp; 3. The governor’s office also recommends letting someone know of your travel plans. In the event you get stuck, they know where you are. &nbsp; 4. Make sure your vehicle has items such as blankets, a shovel, flashlight and extra batteries, warm clothing, tire chains, booster cable, quick energy foods and a bright cloth in case you need it as a distress flag, according to the office. &nbsp; 5. AAA recommends not driving in the snow when you’re tired. 
6. NYS DOT reminds drivers to clear snow off all windows, wipers and the roof. You should also clear your headlights and taillights and make sure your lights are on, as it’s the law in New York state.

Inclement weather drives many to stay indoors. But even in the comfort of your own house, there are steps you can take to ensure your safety. Here are some tips from the Nassau County Executive’s Office for surviving a storm at home: 
OUTSIDE YOUR PROPERTY 
1. Do not plow snow across the road or shovel snow from your driveway onto shoulders or roadways. 
2. Do not pile snow high near intersections or driveways obstructing others’ vision. Park vehicles away from the road and follow local parking ordinances related to snow removal. 
3. Keep rocks, timbers, fences, basketball hoops, garbage bins, reflectors and other items away from the road. 
4. Keep sidewalks and pathways clear for pedestrians. 
5. Use long-handled snow rakes or poles to clean your roof when possible. If you must use a ladder, make sure the base is secure. Ask someone else to hold the ladder while you climb. 
WINTERIZING YOUR HOME 
1. Have your heating system checked by a professional annually. If you heat by wood, clean your fireplace or stove and have your chimney flue checked for any buildup of creosote. 
2. Caulk and weather-strip doors and windowsills to keep cold air out. 
3. Clean gutters; leaves and other debris will hamper drainage. 
4. Replace batteries of smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors. 
5. Locate and insulate pipes most susceptible to freezing, typically those near outer walls, in crawls spaces or in the attic. 
6. Wrap pipes in insulation or layers of old newspapers, covering the newspapers with plastic to keep out moisture. 
7. Disconnect garden hoses and shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house. 
8. Let hot and cold water trickle at night from a faucet on an outside wall. 
9. Open cabinet doors to allow more heat to get to un-insulated pipes under a sink or appliance near an outer wall. 
10. In case pipes burst, make sure you know how to shut off the water. 
11. Never try to thaw a pipe with an open flame or torch. 
STAYING WARM INDOORS 
1. Dress in layers of lightweight clothing and wear a cap. 
2. Use only safe sources of alternative heat such as a fireplace, small well-vented wood or coal stove or portable space heaters. 
3. Keep the area around the fireplace clear of debris, decorations and flammable materials. 
4. Do not use excessive amounts of paper when lighting a fire. 
5. Avoid using liquid fire starter or other flammable liquids to start a fire. 
6. Always keep a screen around an open flame. 
7. Never use gasoline to start a fireplace. 
8. Never burn charcoal indoors. 
9. Keep curtains, towels and potholders away from hot surfaces. 
IF YOU LOSE POWER 
1. Call your utility provider first to determine area repair schedules. 
2. Turn off or unplug lights and appliances to prevent a circuit overload when service is restored, leaving one light on to indicate power has been restored. 
3. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to help reduce food spoilage. 
4. Before installing a generator, be sure to properly disconnect from your utility electrical service. If possible, have your generator installed by a qualified electrician. 
5. Never run a generator indoors. Deadly carbon monoxide gas from the generator’s exhaust can spread throughout enclosed spaces. 
6. If your generator has a detachable fuel tank, remove it before refilling. Fuel spilled on a hot generator can cause an explosion. 
7. If you use a kerosene heater, keep it at least 3 feet away from furniture and other flammable objects. Make sure to use only the correct fuel for your unit, and refuel outdoors when the unit is cool.

How to survive a snowstorm at home

The cold and snow are not just an inevitable inconvenience of winter, but pose the risk of injury, too. 
Brian P. Krebs, a physical therapist with the North Shore-LIJ Rehabilitation Network, said anyone stuck with the shoveling or snow-blowing duties should take precautions to reduce risk of injury. 
“First and foremost, it’s the back,” he said of common injuries, explaining that bending and twisting combined with lifting a weighted object far away from your body increases the likelihood of hurting yourself. 
“Like the old adage goes, ‘you want to make sure you’re lifting with the legs and not your back,’ ” he said. 
To combat the stress load on your body, Krebs suggests using an ergonomic shovel with a bent handle or a push-shovel that has wheels attached and allows the user to just push snow to the side, rather than lifting it. 
Knowing your limits is also important. “Somebody who’s generally an inactive person is at a higher risk [for injury],” Krebs said. 
But injuries are not the only risk, as overexertion during snow cleanup can also lead to a heart attack. 
Dr. David Friedman, the chief of heart failure services at Franklin Hospital, warned against strenuous activity, like snow shoveling, for people with a cardiac history. 
He explained that these activities, coupled with the frigid weather, “can lead to increasing levels of blood pressure, adrenaline-like hormone release in the body ... which can all then lead to constriction or tightening of coronary arteries.” 
More often than not, Friedman said, it is better to be safe than sorry. 
“If you have risk factors for heart disease ... you are probably best served by not overexerting at all when it comes to snow shoveling especially," he said. 
To avoid injuries while shoveling snow, Krebs offers the following simple tips: 
<ul> 
 <li>Bend your knees.</li> 
 <li>Keep abdominal muscles tight.</li> 
 <li>Avoid the bending and twisting.</li> 
 <li>Take lighter loads with the shovel, layering it (¼ or ½ at a time).</li> 
 <li>Push the snow if you can, don’t lift.</li> 
 <li>Take breaks and stretch.</li> 
 <li>For longer-duration storms, try to shovel every couple of inches, rather than waiting to shovel all at once at the end. This will reduce the physical toll shoveling takes on your body.</li> 
 <li>Keep your general activity level in mind so as not to overexert yourself.</li>

Here's what you can do to survive a storm and protect yourself and your loved ones and save many, if not all, of your possessions. 
<h3>FAST FACTS</h3> 
There are many more people on Long Island than there are professionals who have the tools and training to help you after a major storm hits. These professionals are charged, first and foremost, with protecting and preserving larger community assets when a disaster strikes. Your home is at the bottom of their priority list. 
<h3>THE COLD HARD TRUTH</h3> 
What does all this mean? It means you need to consider taking the Boy Scout motto to heart: Be prepared. You need to do all you can to help yourself after a storm hits. Don’t think the fire department or utility company is going to race to your home to help you right away when millions are affected on Long Island from a major storm. It could take days or weeks in extreme situations before you’d ever see help. 
The same is true for repair professionals. They will be too overwhelmed with requests to do repairs or do a temporary patch to your roof or windows to keep weather out. Realize you’ll be on your own or on a huge waiting list. 
<h3>WHAT YOU MUST DO</h3> 
If a major storm strikes, there’s not much you can do ahead of time to make sure your home will come through with little damage. Caulking cracks that might allow wind-driven rain to enter is a good idea. Removing things from your yard that can become airborne missiles that bang into your home is a great idea. 
Take the time before the storm to put all valuables in a place where they can be away from windows and leaking water. Digitize important documents and photos and store them on a small external hard drive that can be put in a purse or knapsack. Make multiple copies and use flash or thumb drives, too. Consider uploading the files to remote storage servers as your backup drives could get lost or damaged. 
Know how to turn off your main gas supply in case a storm causes a gas leak inside your home. A simple wrench should be kept next to the gas meter for this purpose. Know how to turn off the main water supply to your home and drain the lines in case a storm causes your heat to be interrupted. 
If you think you’ll be using an electricity generator of any type for a period of time over eight hours, think again. Any generator that produces enough wattage to really keep your house running is thirsty and will require lots of fuel you must have bought ahead of time and stored safely. Generators require sophisticated knowledge to connect and operate, so consider that ahead of any potential storm. 
Now is also the time to stock up on things that will help you survive. Food and water are vital. If a storm hits in the winter, you need to think about heat. Keep in mind that anything that depends on electricity for heat will be of little value unless you have a way to produce your own electricity for days or weeks. Make sure you know where all your warm clothes are and be sure they’re clean and dry. 
Dried foods can be stored safely in clean five-gallon buckets that have gasketed screw-off lids. Beans, rice or any other easy-to-prepare dried food can be stored in these containers. Small propane-powered camp stoves can be used to cook and heat water. These stoves are affordable and you can buy an adapter to refill small propane tanks from the larger 20-pound tanks that you use for your outdoor grill. 
What are you going to do for water? You can buy cases of bottled water affordably, but not the day before the storm. It takes lots of gallons of water per day to satisfy the needs of a typical family, so barrels of water are not out of the question in case of a major storm that disrupts utilities for days. 
If you live in a low-lying area, you need to be deeply concerned about the storm surge that can raise the level of the ocean by as much as 10 or 15 feet. People die when they refuse to leave coastal houses that are threatened. The houses can be wiped away or reduced to kindling. Think now how you’d move out before the storm and what valuables you’d want to pack in your car. Plan ahead, don’t leave an hour before the storm, when you’re frantic and the roads are gridlocked. 
Be sure you have hand tools that don’t need electricity to operate. Rope, tarps, sheets of plywood or anything else that could cover a broken window or door could be a great help to minimize wind-driven rain damage. 
Try to recall any time you may have gone camping. What did you need to survive for three days outdoors? That’s the frame of mind you need to be in now, and you need to stockpile all the supplies you need because you may not get out for days or even a week. You hear this advice all the time. This time, take it.

You're most likely stuck inside with the kids because of the snowstorm and bitter cold temperatures. Indoor crafts and games can provide easy entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. Early childhood program coordinators at the Long Island Children's Museum in Garden City shared some of the museum's family-friendly activities that you can create and play indoors when the weather outside is too frightful. So grab some hot chocolate and try these 10 crafts and games for kids when you're stuck inside. 
5 HOMEMADE CRAFTS 
Soap crayons 1 cup grated Ivory Soap 1/4 cup warm water Food coloring Plastic molds Directions: Mix water, soap and food coloring together in medium-size bowl. Stir the crayon mixture until it begins to stiffen. Remove the mixture from the bowl and knead until it is the consistency of very thick dough. Spoon crayon mixture into plastic mold. (Ideas for plastic molds: ice cube trays, Play-Doh molds and cutters, Tupperware cookie cutters, plastic cookie cutters or plastic soap molds.) Press down firmly. Place the plastic cookie cutters in your freezer for 10 minutes. When firm, pop the bath crayons out of the cookie cutters (or other molds) and allow them to air dry overnight or until hard. 
Playdough (Play-Doh) 2 cups flour 1 cup warm water 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 1 teaspoon oil 1/4 cup salt Food coloring (optional) Directions: Mix all ingredients, adding food coloring last. Stir over medium heat until smooth. Remove from pan and knead until blended smooth. Place in plastic bag or airtight container when cooled. 
Flour Finger Paint 1 cup flour 2 tbsp. salt 1 1/4 cup hot water 1 1/2 cup cold water Food coloring or tempera paint Directions: Put flour and salt in a saucepan and add cold water. Beat with a whisk or rotary beater until smooth. Add hot water and boil until mixture is thick. Beat until smooth. Keep in refrigerator and add food coloring as needed. 
Slime 2 mixing bowls Measuring cups and spoons 1/2 cup glue (4 oz.) 1 teaspoon borax Food coloring 1 1/2 cup warm water Directions: Mix together 1 teaspoon borax in 1 cup of warm water. Stir until the borax is dissolved. In a separate container, mix 1/2 cup white glue with 1/2 cup warm water. Add several drops of food coloring. You can also mix in other ingredients, such as glitter. Pour the contents of the first bowl into the second, but don't stir. Let it sit for 1 minute, then lift the now-congealed slime out of the bowl. Divide slime so that each child has a piece to play with. The glue in slime can make it stick to certain fabrics. To minimize accidents, give each little monster a zip-top bag to store it in. Safety tip: Since borax is toxic in large doses, be sure to keep the slime away from kids younger than age three.

If your child is not familiar with using scissors, this is a great time to practice, developing fine motor skills. For even younger children, shapes can be pre-cut by an adult. Then ask your child to glue the shapes onto the brown paper lunch bag using a glue stick to create a puppet of their choice. Details can be added with washable markers or crayons. Encourage them to tell you a story with their puppet, or make two and act out scenes together. 
5 INTERACTIVE INDOOR GAMES 
Search and find Put your little detective to work with this fun challenge! On index cards, print up or draw simple pictures of objects that are seen around the house, or that can be seen from a window: a teddy bear, a spoon and a car, for example. Try to incorporate objects above and below a child’s eye level to add to the challenge. If they need hints while searching, try using words like above, below, in front of, behind, underneath and on top of, to encourage spatial development. 
Memory game Practice memorization skills with a low-cost version of a childhood favorite. Create game pieces using index cards. Print out or draw simple pictures on index cards of the same size to create pairs. Themes could be shapes and colors, items that match such as mittens or things that go together like animals and their babies. Make it even more fun by customizing the game with your child’s suggestions. 
Color hunt Practice color recognition by using construction paper in a variety of colors and cut down to a size that can be easily held in a child’s hand. Give your child the task of identifying these colors in household objects. Challenge them to find each color of the rainbow. 
Make a sand-free sandbox Use a large plastic bin, dishpan or aluminum-foil roasting pan as your box. Fill with rice or oatmeal and stock with scoops, funnels, spoons, toy cars, a plastic tea set — whatever suits your child's interests. 
Cardboard box creations When you’re making that last-minute grocery store run before the big storm, ask the manager for boxes from the loading dock, then get out the colored paper and the markers and let the kids use their imaginations.
