Alexander McQueen exhibit breaks visiting records at The Met

“Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” the Met’s run-away runway sensation, has shattered a museum attendance record as buzz builds ahead of the blockbuster exhibit’s final day this weekend.

The show had drawn 582,000 visitors by Sunday night, breaking the record for fashion-exhibit attendance at the museum, The New York Times reported Monday.

The final day is Sunday, and to help meet demand, the museum will stay open until midnight during its last two days.

The show has been attracting crushing crowds since opening in May, exceeding expectations and leaving museum watchers puzzling over just why the show took off the way it did.

“Savage Beauty” showcases the intense work of the British designer, who committed suicide last year at age 40. The most popular fashion exhibit at The Met had been 2008’s “Superheros: Fashion and Fantasy,” which drew 576,000 visitors.

“Savage Beauty” is also on track to crack the august list of Top 20 exhibits ever at the museum.
