Alleged art thief charged after 8 months on the lam in Greece

A man who had second thoughts after he allegedly stole a $150,000 painting from an Upper East Side Art Gallery last year was indicted Tuesday.

Cops arrested Greek national Phivos Istavrioglou, 29, Saturday at Kennedy Airport following an eight-month manhunt.

He allegedly stole Salvador Dalí's "Cartel de Don Juan Tenorio" from the Venus Over Manhattan gallery on Madison Avenue and 77th Street on June 19.

Two-weeks after cops released surveillance video showing him put the artwork in a shopping bag and leave the gallery, investigators found the painting inside a package that originated from Greece at Kennedy Airport addressed to the gallery.

Undercover officers posed as a business manager for an art gallery and invited Istaviroglou to New York for a meeting. The DA charged him with grand larceny.
