And the Tony Award goes to...the NYPD?
And the Tony Award goes to ... the New York Police Department?
Two New York City police precincts will be joining the casts of show like “American Idiot” and “Lend Me A Tenor” at this year’s Tony Awards.
The Midtown North and Midtown South precincts are being awarded the Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre, the committee that administers the awards announced Monday. The awards are in recognition of the precincts’ work in the city’s theater district, the committee said.
On May 1, police dealt with a potential car bomb that had been parked outside the theater where “The Lion King” plays. In December, a plainclothes police officer killed a suspected scam artist near a landmark Broadway hotel after a gunfight.
“We had decided on this particular Tony Honor well before the May 1 incident in Broadway/Times Square, which brought the NYPD’s skills to the forefront of a very public stage,” said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League.
“So our desire to award them for their consistent day-to-day dedication proved even more appropriate.” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the entire department was gratified by the recognition.
“When the NYPD thinks of having its name up in lights, we usually think of roof racks, but the honor is truly appreciated by the officers of Midtown North and Midtown South and by the department at-large,” he said.
The Tony Honors are given to people or organizations with extraordinary achievements in theater outside the regular categories. Past winners have included producers, restaurateurs and stylists.
Other winners this year are the Alliance for Resident Theatres New York; B.H. Barry, who is a leader in teaching stage combat; and Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
The Tony Awards are scheduled for June 13. They are presented by The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing.
