At least 7 dead in Wisconsin temple shooting: Police

A gunman opened fire at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin Sunday morning, killing at least six people before being shot dead by police.

Cops arrived at the temple at around 10:30 a.m. Central Time after receiving multiple 911 calls about a shooting during morning services at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, officials said.

The unidentified gunman “ambushed” one police officer, Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards said, shooting him several times. A second officer shot the alleged gunman dead.

“They stopped this from being worse than it could have been,” the police chief said of the officers.

The injured cop, described as a 20-year law enforcement veteran, underwent surgery Sunday and was expected to survive, police officials said.

Edwards dismissed earlier reports that there may have been another suspect whom had been holding hostages.

“The best information is that there was only one gunman,” Edwards said during a news conference Sunday afternoon, adding that everyone had been removed from the temple.

At least four people were found dead inside the temple, and three others were found outside, including the shooter, according to officials. At least three people, including the injured police officer, were critically injured, though federal and local law enforcement agents were still trying to account for other possible victims Sunday night.

“It was a very coordinated thing. It wasn’t haphazard,” temple member Amardeep Kaleka told CNN.

Officials said the FBI is treating the incident as a case of “domestic terrorism,” though they declined to provide any information on the alleged gunman. A news conference was scheduled for Monday morning.
