Bloomberg moves up Forbes' richest people in the world list

Mayor Michael Bloomberg moved up from the No. 20 spot in 2012 on the Forbes' richest people in the world list to No. 13 this year, with a net worth of $27 billion.

He was worth $22 billion in 2012.

A record 1,426 billionaires made the list this year, up 200 from 2012, the magazine announced Monday.

Forbes writer Clare O'Connor told amNewYork that Bloomberg's bank account went up thanks to the success of his company Bloomberg LP.

"When Bloomberg's revenues get a boost, so does his fortune," she said, specifying that the mayor owns 88% of the LP.

The mayor, however, said he never liked the list and called the numbers suspect.
"I haven't seen this year's Forbes 400 list, but a lot of my friends who are on the list are phenomenally generous," he said during a non-related news conference.

Added together, the total net worth for this year's billionaires is $5.4 trillion, up from $4.6 trillion last year.
