Cities goes dark in honor of World AIDS Day

Millions around the world Wednesday will observe World AIDS Day, which has been marked since 1989 and aims to increase awareness about the disease. More than 33.3 million people worldwide are impacted by AIDS.
“Some people think that the pandemic is on its way out,” Singer Bono said as he launched World AIDS Day in Australia yesterday. “It is really not so.”
The year’s theme is Light for Rights, which encourages cities to dim lights in solidarity. From 5:30 to 6:30 tonight, landmark city structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the New York Stock Exchange and the arch at Washington Square Park will go dark.
Other events around the city today include:
— Housing Works’ 24-hour AIDS Vigil will begin at 12:01 a.m. at City Hall Park. Names of affected family and friends will be read.
— Brooklyn Public Library will offer day-long testing starting at 9 a.m.
— VillageCare Commemoration will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Rivington House, 45 Rivington St., featuring a performance by Kid Cudi.
