City Council to mull 10 bills to improve extreme weather preparedness

The City Council announced a series of bills Wednesday aimed at improving the city's emergency response for the next major storm.

The 10 bills to be introduced next week include plans for sheltering New Yorkers, helping businesses recover and fuel management.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said the bill sponsors used the information from months of Superstorm Sandy hearings to come up with these proposals.

"It became clear that in certain areas, the city needs better plans," the mayoral candidate said.

Other bills include using ferries and buses as transportation alternatives if the MTA shuts subways again and tracking special needs residents who live in shelters.

Quinn said Mayor Michael Bloomberg is reviewing the package, which has bipartisan support.
