Columbia student in drug ring gets 6 months at Rikers in plea

A former Columbia University student busted for dealing drugs along with four classmates last year in “Operation Ivy League,” struck a plea deal Tuesday that could get him out of jail in 3 1/2 months.
Harrison David, 20, pleaded guilty in Manhattan Supreme Court to selling cocaine to an undercover police officer on Aug. 24 in his W. 113th St. apartment. Under the agreement, the former engineering student will begin serving a six-month jail term on Aug. 30, followed by five years probation.
David’s lawyer, Matthew Myers, said his client could be released in less than four months for good behavior and time served.
“I think David has learned his lesson,” Myers said. “Hopefully he can move on with his life.”
The four other ex-Columbia students, who are charged with selling drugs including marijuana, LSD and oxycodone and amphetamines, rejected deals that would have required them to plead guilty, but spared them from jail time. They are seeking drug treatment and no record.
From July – December 2010 undercover officers made 31 drug buys from the students worth a total of $11,000.
