Council expects to vote Tuesday on new NYC budget deal

The City Council is expected to vote on a budget Tuesday for fiscal year 2012 that prevents the layoff of 4,100 teachers and the closing of 20 firehouses.
The deal on the $66 billion budget was announced late Friday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Council Speaker Christine Quinn and teachers union president Michael Mulgrew.
In order to save the teaching jobs, the union agreed to suspend teacher sabbaticals for one year and allow for teachers without assigned duties to also serve as substitutes.
The city is still expected to lose 2,600 teachers through attrition, and the mayor warned of looming budget problems in upcoming years.
