Days after the World Trade Center was destroyed at the direction of Osama bin Laden, President George W. Bush visited what was only then starting to be called Ground Zero, standing on the smoldering ruins that were a grave to thousands.

Almost 10 years later, President Barack Obama today will return to the same place to lay a wreath, days after bin Laden himself was killed on Obama’s orders.

amNewYork visited Ground Zero yesterday and asked New Yorkers what they’d like to tell Obama, and there was a resounding theme:

“Thank you!”

But New Yorkers had a follow-up question: “What now?”

Their gratitude is laced with a fear of terrorist reprisals and speculation about how to prevent a recurrence of what is no longer unthinkable.
