Manhattan Chamber of Commerce chairman quits amid lawsuit

Jeffrey Bernstein, chairman of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, quit Tuesday after The Albert Ellis Institute sued him for embezzling $2.3 million while he was president of the non-profit, according to published reports.
The Manhattan federal court suit contends that JPMorgan Chase Bank allowed Bernstein, 61, to make at least 65 authorized transfers to his accounts between April 2010 and last February, the New York Post said.
Bernstein, who once ran the BurritoVille and Pudgie's Famous Chicken franchise chains, "misappropriated" the money "for his personal benefit," the paper reported.
The famed late psychologist Ellis founded the Institute in 1959.
