Miley Cyrus on "SNL": No twerking, but plenty of self-awareness

It's official: Hannah Montana is dead.

Miley Cyrus made the proclamation in her "Saturday Night Live" monologue this weekend, saying her alter ego from her younger years was "murdered," as she jokingly addressed the controversial VMAs performance.

"I got a lot of letters from angry mothers, turned-on fathers, and this is true, I actually got a complaint from the inventor of the giant foam finger," Cyrus said. "But, it's OK, I gave him tickets to tonight's show."

The show was Cyrus-heavy, sending up the controversy around her VMA performance in the opening skit, showing a dystopian America that was destroyed by her onstage antics.

Cyrus' video for "We Can't Stop" was also lampooned, remade into a government shutdown parody called "We Did Stop" that featured a writhing Cyrus as Michele Bachmann and cast member Taran Killam as John Boehner.

Cyrus, 20, performed her latest single, "Wrecking Ball," and later an acoustic version of "We Can't Stop."

The episode was mostly without controversy, however, and Cyrus' most famous trait -- her twerking -- was deliberately absent, as the singer promised to skip it.

"Now that white people are doing it," she said, "it's kinda lame."
