Ex-governor, presidential hopeful ... "Saturday Night Live" star?
Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is "considering" a hosting gig on "SNL" after the show's executive producer Lorne Michaels asked Romney if he'd like a hosting spot, The New York Times reported Sunday.
The ex-Massachusetts governor may not seem like much of a comedian, but SNL writer Jim Downey said there have been signs, “he was funny on Letterman, giving the Top Ten list.” Romney has also appeared on “The Late Show with Jay Leno.”
The presumed presidential nominee is a familiar target for the sketch show, which has skewered his stiff, bland public persona.
“There’s a creepy youth minister kind of squareness to him, especially combined with the goofy eagerness to please,” Downey told the Times.
If Romney agrees, he will be the first presidential candidate to host since Steve Forbes in 1996.
Still, odds are he won’t garner the same buzz as former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who appeared on the show in 2008 with her running mate and presidential candidate John McCain, according to SNL cast member Meyers.
“Sarah Palin was a once-in-a-lifetime situation,” Meyers said. “She was incredibly magnetic and came with a built-in catchphrase.”
Based on the hosting calendar, he could potentially make his attempt to do so this fall.
