‘Elementary: The First Season’
There have been a lot of takes on Sherlock Holmes in recent years, and the latest is CBS’ “Elementary,” starring Jonny Lee Miller as the famed detective. The series is set in modern times, but with two big changes: It takes place in the Big Apple and Dr. Watson is Dr. Joan Watson (played wonderfully by Lucy Liu). Miller’s Holmes is an incredibly intelligent master of deduction. He’s not without his vices, though, and much of the season deals with his being a recovering drug addict. Watson starts out as his “sober companion,” but evolves into much more as the series progresses. “Elementary” begins as a bit of a standard procedural, but evolves as the season goes on to build complicated, fascinating and fulfilling plot lines. Just wait till you see what they did with Holmes’ nemesis Moriarty. The new season starts Sept. 26. Catch up now. (DVD, $55.98)

‘Kon-Tiki’
This Oscar-nominated film follows the true story of Thor Heyerdahl (Pal Sverre Hagen) as he sets out in 1947 to prove that South Americans were the first to settle the Polynesian islands, by embarking on a treacherous 5,000-mile trip on a raft built using ancient methods.
