NRA sues governor over New York's assault weapons ban

The NRA has sued the state in order to strike down the newly instituted ban against assault rifles.

In its complaint against Gov. Andrew Cuomo that was filed Thursday in federal court, the group contends that the law that went into effect on March 15 violated the Second Amendment.

Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, said the law's language limited the sale and purchase of a large amount of weapons.

"Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature usurped the legislative and democratic process in passing these extreme anti-gun measures with no committee hearings and no public input," he said in a statement.

The governor's office didn't return messages for comment.

In the 46-page lawsuit, the NRA laid out a number of concerns it had with the ban on assault rifles and magazines that have greater than 10 rounds and its impact on businesses. The group contends that many gun shop owners will lose significant sales because of the restrictions.
