NYC would lose $1 billion in federal aid with Republican budget

New York City could lose $1 billion in federal aid under the House Republicans’ budget plan to be voted on this week, according to a study released yesterday by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens/Brooklyn).
His office compiled a list of grants and other funding sources the city would potentially see cut. They include:
•The NYPD losing $40 million, equivalent to more than 150 cops being taken off the streets.
•The MTA losing $73 million for rail and bus infrastructure, and security projects.
•The Low Income Heating and Energy Assistance Program, which helps residents with their heating bills, cut by $4.5 million.
“The deficit needs to be reduced, but cutting cops and other vital services is not the way to do it,” Weiner said in a statement.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama will release his proposed fiscal year 2012 budget today. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the president’s budget sounds like it “spends too much, borrows too much and taxes too much.”
The city is also already slated to $2.1 billion from the state if the budget as currently proposed is passed.
