NYPD steps up counterterrorism measures

The NYPD says it is stepping up counterterrorism measures at city hotels in the wake of a terrorist attack in Afghanistan.

Police spokesman Paul Browne says the move was not prompted by any specific threat, but police are taking no chances as they learn more about the attack on Kabul's Inter-Continental Hotel, which is frequented by foreigners.

"The NYPD is providing additional counterterrorism coverage of New York hotels, not as a result of any specific threat information, but as a precaution until more is known about the attack in Kabul," Browne said. "This is the Police Department's standard response to attacks overseas until more is learned."

Police are using heavily armed Hercules units and swarms of police cars to provide a security presence at the hotels, police said.
