Owners of trucking companies at WTC site charged with fraud

Two owners of trucking companies have been charged with a fraud involving the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site.
Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn announced charges on Thursday accusing the men of embezzling more than $1 million by underpaying employees and withholding benefits.
Court papers say one of the companies had a 2007 contract to take dirt and debris from the World Trade Center site to landfills in New York, New Jersey and Long Island. Prosecutors allege the owner submitted false paperwork saying he had given union workers the required hourly wage and benefits on that job.
The men face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of embezzlement, mail fraud and tax evasion.
