Parts of East Village, Lower East Side get landmark status

The Landmarks Preservation Commission Tuesday voted 6-1 to give parts of the East Village and Lower East Side "historic district" status.
The area covers 330 buildings across 15 blocks, stretching up Second Avenue between East Second and East Seventh streets along with a few blocks around First Avenue.
The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation is the major backer of the proposal, and its executive director, Andrew Berman, said it was "very encouraging to see the progress we are making."
The neighborhood's "proud and dynamic history not only shaped New York, but our nation and the world," Berman said. "Too much has been lost of late in the East Village to new high-rise dorms, hotels," he said, adding that the new status will "help preserve the East Village's special character."
Under the landmark status, buildings must clear all major external modifications -- such as big renovations or demolitions -- with the commission, so alterations "do not detract from the special character of the city's landmarks and historic districts," according to the LPC.
