Major ballot initiatives were weighed across the country on Tuesday. Here are some of the most notable:

- Colorado voters passed a ballot measure, making their state the first to legalize possession and sales of marijuana for recreational use, putting the state at odds with federal law. Washington state also legalized marijuana for recreational use.

-Maryland voters approved same-sex marriage, the governor said, and a similar measure in Maine appeared on track to pass as well - marking the first time marriage rights have been extended to same-sex couples by popular vote.

The results of two other ballot questions on gay marriage: one in Minnesota and one in Washington state were not yet conclusive:

-In Washington state, election officials said it will take several days to count all of the votes cast on Tuesday and the result of the gay marriage referendum was not immediately known .

-In Minnesota, where voters considered adding a ban on gay marriage to the state constitution, the result was too close to call.
