Record smashing swimmer Diana Nyad to swim laps for two days in Herald Square

Swimming 110 miles from Cuba to Florida was apparently just a warm-up.

Beginning Tuesdayat 8:30 a.m., swimmer Diana Nyad will be swimming for 48 hours straight in a pool set up in Herald Square to support Superstorm Sandy recovery efforts while raising money for AmeriCares, the global health and disaster relief organization.

"As we near the one-year anniversary of [Superstorm] Sandy, it's crucial that we recognize the importance of disaster relief," Nyad, 64, said.

Nyad, who was born in New York City, will be joined at various times by Olympic gold medalists Nastia Liukin and Ryan Lochte, comedian Michael Ian Black, health guru Richard Simmons, Jersey Shore's Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola, "True Blood's" Joe Manganiello and "Twilight's" Nikki Reed.

The event, underwritten by Procter & Gamble, will be held in a 120-foot-long, two-lane pool.
