Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was released from a Florida hospital's intensive care unit and will "spend some time recovering" in the facility, his spokesman, Ted Goodman, posted on X late Wednesday.
"Mayor Giuliani — the man who took down the Mafia, saved New York City, and ran toward the towers on September 11th — is the same fighter he’s always been, and he’s winning this fight," Goodman posted.
It remained unclear Wednesday night when Giuliani, 81, was first admitted for treatment of pneumonia following a trip to Paris. His condition required a ventilator and became so dire that a Catholic priest gave him last rites, Newsday previously reported, but Giuliani has since improved. He was previously diagnosed with restrictive airway disease related to his exposure following the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the World Trade Center.
Goodman attributed Giuliani’s improving health to "the power of prayer." He offered no additional information regarding the ex-mayor’s condition in the post.
Giuliani, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, gained notoriety as "America's Mayor" for his leadership on 9/11 and in the chaotic days afterward. He unsuccessfully ran for president and served as an adviser to President Donald Trump before he was disbarred for false public statements alleging fraud in the 2020 presidential election won by Joe Biden.
