Schumer: Audit all N.Y. tour bus companies
Sen. Charles Schumer is asking the state Department of Motor Vehicles to audit all tour bus operators in New York in the wake of last week's fatal tour bus crash in the Bronx.
The Cuomo administration has already mounted stepped-up spot checks of tour buses since the crash. The checks have forced several buses and drivers out of service.
Schumer (D-N.Y.) applauded Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's efforts to increase unannounced inspections and said a DMV audit of drivers would augment that effort.
Schumer's proposal comes after a sting operation Friday by state investigators. At one stop in Manhattan, all 14 tour buses pulled over were ordered off the road because of various violations against the driver and concerns about the safety of the buses. New York City police, which participated in the sting, said 54 criminal summonses were issued, with eight buses towed away because of safety violations.
