A Brooklyn hospital where a patient died in a waiting room will undergo improvements mandated by a consent decree aimed at settling litigation over conditions there.

The settlement announced Friday calls for conditions at the
Kings County Hospital Center to continue to be monitored by a federal judge for five years.

A lawsuit had alleged that psychiatric inpatient units were overcrowded and dangerously unsanitary and that patients were routinely ignored and abused.

In June 2008, 49-year-old Esmin Green languished for nearly 24
hours before collapsing from a blood clot. She had had been
diagnosed with schizophrenia.
