Suspect charged with hate crime at city's oldest gay bar

A customer was bashed in a hate crime at the city’s oldest gay bar, police said, the latest in a string of shocking attacks.
The suspect, Frederick Giunta, 45, allegedly used racial and homophobic epithets Oct. 11 against a black customer. Giunta became enraged after a bartender denied him service at the Julius Bar on West 10th Street, police announced Monday.
"What are you going to do,” said Giunta, who used slurs against black people and gays, according to the criminal complaint.
Just before the incident, Giunta had been at Ty’s Bar, at 114 Christopher St., where he allegedly tried to snatch a man’s wallet and punched him so hard he needed stitches, authorities said.
Police arrested Giunta on Friday and charged him with third-degree assault as a hate crime and attempted robbery.
Earlier attacks included one at Stonewall Inn, the seat of the gay-rights movement, and another in the Bronx in which 11 gang members allegedly beat four people in anti-gay hazing.
