As Tottenham winger Gareth Bale jogged around the pitch at Red Bull Arena Monday, he was serenaded with chants of "Bale, Bale, Bale," by adoring fans who had turned up to watch an open practice in Harrison, N.J.
It's a sight that Andre Villas-Boas, head coach of Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League, has become used to seeing on the team's preseason tour of the United States.
"Extremely positive," Villas-Boas said of seeing the hundreds of Spurs fans in attendance at the training session. "It's a continuation of what we saw in L.A. and Baltimore with the fans coming up to greet us, which is excellent."
Tottenham -- who played the L.A. Galaxy last week and Premier League rival Liverpool in Baltimore on Saturday -- will take on the Red Bulls Tuesday night in an exhibition match. The Red Bulls have a few players Tottenham will be very familiar with. Thierry Henry gave Spurs fans nightmares for years playing for Arsenal, while former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill was introduced yesterday as a Red Bulls player after obtaining a work visa.
Cahill will make his Red Bulls debut tonight -- a quick turnaround for a player who last week didn't know if he'd be allowed to work in the U.S.
"I know playing tomorrow night might be a bit quick, but I'm here now," he told reporters. "I'm feeling fit, I'm feeling good. It might be a bit stupid, or whatever, but that's what we do."
