Two stabbings on the subways; crime starts to rise

It was a bloody weekend on the subways, with two stabbings within less than 24 hours.

On Saturday night, a 20-year-old man was stabbed repeatedly on a Queens-bound J train in Cypress Hills around 9:30 p.m., police said. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital, and was in stabled condition yesterday. As of press time, police were still searching for suspects.

Earlier in the day, a 22-year-old man who got in a fight with another man was stabbed in the stomach on an A train at 34th Street just before 8 a.m., police said. The victim was taken to Bellevue hospital and was in stable condition. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

Crime in the subways has started to rise, with the number of major felonies up 1.2 percent so far this year compared to the same period last year, transit data shows.

“It’s not a large increase, but of course we’re concerned anytime we see an increase,” transit bureau chief Raymond Diaz said recently. “We’re confident we’re going to turn that around.”

Still, the subways are way safer than they were a decade ago, with six major crimes committed a day as opposed to 11 a day in 2000.
