North Babylon road reopens after car topples pole, police say

Suffolk County police closed Weeks Road in North Babylon for several hours Wednesday after a car crash brought down power lines.

A police spokeswoman said the road was closed in both directions after the 2:30 p.m. crash and it was reopened by 7:30 p.m.

A silver car left the road and hit a utility pole, knocking down most of the pole and becoming stuck on top of the remaining stump in the ground.

The pole brought down wires in the street, the spokeswoman said. It was unclear if the driver was injured.

Photos from the scene show a mangled bumper dangling from the front of the car, which was propped up on the utility pole.

PSEG Long Island was notified of the crash and sent a representative to the scene to evaluate the damage, a PSEG spokeswoman said.

A crew reset the pole and had to cut power to two homes to complete the work. Power is expected to be restored by 12 a.m., the spokeswoman said.
