Monique Roberge hit three free throws in overtime as No. 11 Sewanhaka scored a 58-55 upset of sixth-seeded New Hyde Park in a first-round Nassau Class A girls basketball playoff game Friday night.
Roberge's first free throw with 3:18 left in the extra session gave Sewanhaka (10-8) a 56-55 lead. Roberge's free throws were the only points Sewanhaka scored in overtime. She finished with 10 points, including an 8-foot jumper with 1:37 left in regulation that tied the score at 55 and forced overtime. Celine Jolicoeur had 23 points for Sewanhaka and Maria Katsoulis scored 21 points for New Hyde Park. Sewanhaka will visit No. 3 South Side in a quarterfinal on Tuesday.
South Side 42, Island Trees 33: Megan Lonergan had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 3 South Side (14-4) in the first round of the Class A playoffs.
Seaford 51, Floral Park 43: Nicole Nulty (11 points) hit a three-pointer early in the third quarter to put No. 7 Seaford (11-7) ahead 35-33 in a Class A first-round game. Meghan Curley had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Stephanie Meyer had 11 points in the win. Seaford will play at No. 2 Garden City on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a quarterfinal.
Mineola 34, Wantagh 33: Krystie Kern's two-pointer with 2 minutes left gave No. 8 Mineola a 34-29 lead in a Class A first-round matchup. Mineola will play at No. 1 Division in a quarterfinal on Tuesday.
North Shore 78, Lawrence 46: Amanda Johansen scored a game high 22 points and had 17 rebounds, six assists and four steals and Jackie Gioia had 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and six steals to lead No. 4 North Shore (16-2) over No. 13 Lawrence in the first round of the Class A playoffs. North Shore will host No. 5 Lynbrook in a quarterfinal on Tuesday at noon.
Portledge 40, Waldorf 35: Lisa Dourmashkin scored seven of her 12 points in the fourth quarter as top-seeded Portledge held off No. 2 Waldorf for the IPPSAL championship at Solomon Schecter late Thursday. Waldorf led 35-34 with a minute left, but Dourmashkin hit a free throw and Kristie Kelly (10 points) added a two-pointer to give Portledge (14-0) a 37-35 lead.
