Authorities have charged an off-duty police officer in southern New Jersey with driving under the influence after his weapon accidentally discharged and wounded a friend.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says Pine Beach Officer Jesse Urban reported an accidental shooting in the parking lot of a convenience store in Lacey Township before 6 a.m. Friday.

The prosecutor's office says the friend underwent surgery for a non-life threatening wound.

The prosecutor's office says police charged Urban with driving under the influence after finding evidence of alcohol.

The 23-year-old has been suspended without pay from the Pine Beach Police Department.

Urban has been on the force since June.

It's not known if Urban has a lawyer.
