A 53-year-old Yonkers man has died and a woman is hospitalized after their rowboat capsized in a New York reservoir.

The Journal News reports that boat capsized early Sunday in the New Croton Reservoir in Westchester County.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection is investigating the accident.

The department operates the reservoir, which provides drinking water to the five boroughs.

Investigators estimate that the rowboat capsized between 3 and 5 a.m.

DEP spokesman Adam Bosch says there were life vests on board the boat but the man and woman weren't wearing them.

Their names were not immediately released.

Boating on the reservoir is permitted for fishing.

The reservoir is about 22 miles north of New York City.
