Riders learn about strike when they arrive at LIRR station
In the shadow of apartment buildings, the train tracks in Wyandanch were quiet. The rhythmic sound of passing trains had been replaced by the grumble of trucks on a parallel road.
The transit oriented development hosts a 7-Eleven, Sir Shave, a Caribbean restaurant and a Domino’s Pizza. A Chase bank occupies a corner spot.
Saturday morning, the bustle kept its distance from the train tracks, save for those hoping a train would come.
A man in a baseball cap fed $27 in cash through a ticket vending machine. He took the ticket from the receptacle. Upon finding out there were no trains today, he took his spot on the platform anyway.
Moments later, two women approached the same machine. With plans to take the train to Jamaica, they had no idea there was a strike, Fabiola Vaca said in Spanish.
