Roestenberg's no-hitter leads Division
Senior Mike Roestenberg pitched his first career no-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead No. 7 Division to a 1-0 win over No. 6 South Side on Friday to sweep the best-of-three series in the Nassau Class A baseball quarterfinals. Matt Fantorufo had an RBI single in the first inning for Division (16-6), which will play Game 1 of the best-of-three semifinals Monday. South Side is 13-9.
Lynbrook 3, Island Trees 2: Mike Milillo hit a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to score pinch runner Anthony Mackie, who moved to third on a single by Danny Grossi, and helped No. 13 Lynbrook (14-9) even the series at 1 with No. 3 Island Trees (18-4) in the Nassau Class A quarterfinals. Will Norris allowed no earned runs, four hits, four walks and struck out four in a complete game. Game 3 will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Island Trees.
Plainedge 6, Seaford 2: Anthony Mauceri hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to put No. 1 Plainedge (22-0) up 2-0 to sweep the best-of-three Nassau Class A quarterfinals over No. 14 Seaford (13-10). Anthony Graziano allowed one earned run and seven hits with four strikeouts in five innings. Tom Smith pitched two hitless innings for the save. Plainedge will play the lowest-remaining seed Monday in Game 1 of the best-of-three semifinals.
Garden City 9, Mineola 1: Frank Cordio pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts to lead No. 4 Garden City (17-4-1) over No. 9 Mineola (13-10) in Game 2 of a Nassau Class A quarterfinal. Matt Focella's two-run homer in the third gave GC a 3-0 lead and Cordio's two-run single made it 5-0 in the fourth. Game 3 is at noon Saturday at Garden City.
MacArthur 6, Baldwin 4: Kevin Roach came into the game in the second inning with No. 2 MacArthur (17-5) trailing 3-1 and went 5 2/3 innings and allowed one run and four hits for the win in Game 3 of a quarterfinal series. Will Cheshire tied the score at 3 in the second with a single and scored two runs. MacArthur will host No. 3 Oceanside in Game 1 of the best-of-three semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Monday. No. 8 Baldwin is 12-10.
East Rockaway 8, Locust Valley 6: David Hobbs hit a three-run homer with one out in the top of the seventh to help No. 3 East Rockaway (13-10) rally from a 6-5 deficit and beat No. 2 Locust Valley (17-5) in Game 3 of the Nassau Class B semifinals. Luke Burggraf allowed five hits, three walks and struck out seven in a complete-game win. David McClure was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and one run scored in the win. East Rockaway will face No. 1 Oyster Bay in the best-of-three final series beginning at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Hofstra.
Holy Trinity 7, Kellenberg 2: Alex Robinson threw a four-hitter, walked one and struck out nine and Zack Parenty went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for No. 5 Holy Trinity (12-10) in the first round of the CHSAA playoffs. Holy Trinity will play at No. 4 St. John the Baptist at 3 p.m. Saturday with the winner advancing to the semifinals. No. 6 Kellenberg is 3-15.
St. John the Baptist 6, St. Mary's 2: Brendan McKnight pitched six innings, allowing one earned run and two hits, with seven strikeouts for No. 4 St. John the Baptist (11-8) in the first round of the CHSAA playoffs. Joe Longo went 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles and two runs in the win. No. 7 St. Mary's is 3-14.
Kings Park 5, Hauppauge 4: Joey Lynn hit a walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to win it and clinch a playoff berth for Kings Park (10-8) in Suffolk League V. Nick Venier pitched six innings and allowed seven hits, two walks and nine strikeouts, and went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Smithtown West 5, East Islip 4: Down to his final strike in the bottom of the seventh, Ricky Alessi (3-for-3) singled to score Anthony Gatto, who walked with two outs, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error as Smithtown West (14-4) clinched the League III title.
Floyd 3, Sachem East 2: Jonathan Martinez hit a two-run double in the top of the fifth to give Floyd (9-8) a 2-0 lead in League I. Mark Tucker singled to score Martinez for a 3-0 lead. Argileo Camuy threw out the tying run in the bottom of the sixth on a single to rightfield.
Bay Shore 7, Connetquot 4: Tyler White went 3-for-5 with a double, two stolen bases, two runs and two RBIs to lead Bay Shore (7-11) in League II.
