Savarese's layup gives Syosset girls win
Victoria Savarese scored on a layup with six seconds left in overtime to give Syosset a 52-51 win over Uniondale on Friday night in Nassau Conference AA-I girls basketball. Savarese (17 points) hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to tie the score at 50 for Syosset (3-4). Savarese went 4-for-4 in the final 20 seconds of regulation to tie the score at 43. Lauren Maturo had 17 points and 15 rebounds in the win. Uniondale is 4-3.
Freeport 50, Oceanside 32: Senior LaTashia Morris scored a career-high 29 points for Freeport (5-2).
Mepham 51, Calhoun 49: Eighth-grader Megan Anderson's bank shot with 1:20 left tied the score at 47 and Nicole Castaldo's baseline jumper with 30 seconds to go gave Mepham (8-0) a three-point lead as it overcame an 11-point third-quarter deficit in Conference AA-III. Castaldo had 14 points and nine rebounds.
Division 36, New Hyde Park 32: Christina Rea scored 12 points for Division (6-1) in Conference A-I.
Sewanhaka 51, Plainedge 30: Senior Megan Mullaney had a career-high 24 points, including six three-pointers, to lead Sewanhaka (4-3).
Friends Academy 40, East Rockaway 38: Reoni Mapp hit a three-pointer with 15 seconds left in overtime to give Friends Academy (4-4) a 39-38 lead in Conference BC. Marissa Reyes led Friends with 15 points. Shannon Pujol (13 points) hit two free throws with 40 seconds left to give East Rockaway (1-7) a 38-36 lead.
Carle Place 44, Cold Spring Harbor 41: Samantha Burden hit a shot with less than 20 seconds left in the game and made 2 of 3 free throws after a foul and a technical to give Carle Place (7-1) a 42-39 lead in Conference BC. The sophomore finished with a career-high 21 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. Jill Flecker added 10 points and 17 rebounds. Kelly Vassallo's 19 points led Cold Spring Harbor (7-1).
BOYS BASKETBALL
MacArthur 50, Hicksville 44: Kevin Monahan scored 26 points to lead MacArthur (6-1) in Conference AA-II.Division 62, New Hyde Park 59: J.J. Kissane scored four of his 22 points in overtime for Division (1-6) in Conference A-I. He scored with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 55. Colby Lapp had 17 points in the win. Kevin Towey scored 22 points for New Hyde Park (5-3).
Westbury 44, Wantagh 42: Luckens Victor scored on a dunk with 32 seconds left to win it for Westbury (5-2). Victor had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Manhasset 82, Valley Stream South 66: Dan Merola had 26 points, including 7-for-9 from three-point range, for Manhasset (7-0) in Conference A-III.
Island Trees 48, Roosevelt 46: Casey Hastings hit a three with one minute remaining in overtime to put Island Trees (2-3) up by two and later stole the ball with four seconds left to seal the win in Conference A-IV. C.J. Novack found J.T. Tassawer for a layup with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 41. Mike Witteck led Island Trees with 17 points. Shaquille Hanson's 24 points led Roosevelt.
Sachem East 57, Brentwood 55: Dan Candemeres hit a jumper with 1.4 seconds left to win it for Sachem East (5-2) in Suffolk League I. Brian Corbett tied the score at 55 for the Flaming Arrows. He scored 14 of his 29 points in a 20-10 fourth quarter, and added 11 rebounds.
Whitman 47, Connetquot 35: Myles Jones had 17 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, six steals and four blocked shots for Whitman (5-2) in League II.
Wyandanch 78, Mercy 58: Junior Alexander Williams had a career-high 24 points and 14 rebounds for Wyandanch (2-4) in League VII.
