Schmidt most outstanding at Limmer meet
Holy Trinity's Colleen Schmidt was in midseason form Saturday as she took home the most outstanding athlete award at the Paul Limmer Invitational at Calhoun.
The Titans senior distance runner won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 19 seconds and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4 x 800 relay team (10:05.5).
The Holy Trinity boys also had a big day. Austin Mituniewicz ran the anchor leg on the first-place 4 x 400-meter team and won the 800 in 1:59.0.
Lawrence's Alexx Baum was also a double winner as she took first in the triple jump in 36 feet, 5 inches and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4 x 100-meter relay (53.4).
Calhoun's Kyle Vadnais won the 110 hurdles (16.2) and the 400 (69.2). He was joined by his Colts teammates, who won the distance medley relay in 11:22.2.
Floral Park's Ronnell Jones (11.3) and teammate Amir Lott (11.4) took first and second in the 100-meter dash, and Mepham's Miguel Shaw won the 400 in 51.7.
Cody Israel ran to a first-place finish in the 200 in 22.7 and helped Chaminade take second overall with 61 points behind Arlington (158). Great Neck South finished third (49).
The Arlington girls took first with 113 points, followed by Calhoun (60) and Hewlett (47).
New Hyde Park's Neigelle Francisco won the girls 100 in 12.7 seconds, and Mineola's Nina Ribiero took the 200 in 27.4.
SOFTBALL
Plainedge 4, Floral Park 3: Jaclyn Oleksak's two-run single in the bottom of the tenth won it for Plainedge in Conference A-I. Mount Sinai 9, Center Moriches 8: Lindsay Putkowski's RBI single in the top of the seventh broke a tie at 8 for Mt. Sinai in League VII. Gianna Gully went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.
Longwood 3, Commack 1: Andrea Karlman struck out four in a four-hitter and had two hits for Longwood in League I. Eighth-grader Leah Mele had the go-ahead two-run double in the bottom of the third to put Longwood ahead 2-0.
Baseball
Plainedge 5, Hewlett 4: Steve Miller was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Anthony Mauceri went 1-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Plainedge in non-league. Tom Smith pitched two scoreless innings to end the game and recorded three strikeouts.
Carey 12, Freeport 0: Nick Vilchez had two home runs and three RBIs in the second inning to lead Carey in non-league. Kyle DeMeo's grand slam preceded Vilchez's second home run. Jesse Montalto struck out 10 in a two-hitter to earn the win.
