Smithtown gets nearly $7G from trucking company in settlement

The Town of Smithtown has reached a settlement with a New Jersey trucking company whose driver allegedly struck town workers repairing a traffic signal two years ago.
Appol Trucking Llc, of Passaic, and an employee, Flavio M. Alarcon, agreed to pay the town $6,943.99 to settle a lawsuit brought against them by the town. The settlement was approved by the town board on Feb. 28.
The suit stemmed from a Dec. 14, 2011, incident in which Alarcon allegedly struck a town Traffic Safety department bucket truck carrying workers repairing a signal at Pulaski Road and First Avenue in Smithtown. In court papers, town attorneys said Alarcon caused the accident and he was driving at a high rate of speed.
No one was injured in the accident. Court papers do not indicate whether Alarcon was charged.
The collision caused $11,086.78 in damage to the town truck, which was replaced for one month by a rental vehicle that cost the town $2,800.
Appol Trucking and Alarcon could not be reached for comment.
