State Assembly declares May 20 'Trans-Atlantic Flight Day' in honor of Charles Lindbergh

A legislative resolution declaring May 20 “Trans-Atlantic Flight Day” in honor of Charles Lindbergh has passed the State Assembly.
Assemb. Edward Ra (R-Franklin Square) submitted a resolution, which does not require a companion in the Senate, calling for the designation. Lindbergh flew to Paris from Roosevelt Field on May 20, 1927, the first solo nonstop trans-Atlantic flight.
Ra’s resolution stemmed from an effort by Hofstra University student Adam Sackowitz to preserve an East Garden City monument that denotes the spot where Lindbergh took off.
The stone monument is located next to the Source mall, on the site of the runway where the Spirit of St. Louis left for Paris.
“Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic Ocean changed the course of American history in the 20th century and the fact that this journey began right here in our community is a badge of honor for our residents,” Ra said in a statement.
The resolution passed the Assembly on May 20. Sackowitz and Hempstead Town officials are pushing for landmark status for the monument so that it can be preserved.
