Storm-hit curbs and sidewalks in Smithtown get repairs

Crews hired by the Town of Smithtown are scheduled to begin work Monday to repair sidewalks and curbs damaged by uprooted trees during superstorm Sandy.
Sidewalks alone sustained about $156,000 worth of damage as a result of the Oct. 29 storm, Highway Superintendent Glenn Jorgensen said. He added that it will take “all summer” to complete repairs at about 250 locations.
Nesconset-based Jadeco Construction Corp. will do the work. The town’s budget includes as much as $1 million for sidewalk repairs and as much as $1 million for curbs, Jorgensen said.
Work will begin on Monday in Commack. Other locations will be decided on a case-by-case basis, Jorgensen said.
Sidewalks and curbs were cracked by hundreds of fallen trees. Jorgensen said he expects federal reimbursements to cover as much as 80 percent of repair costs.
Crews will repair sprinklers and reseed lawns damaged by broken sidewalks and curbs, Jorgensen said.
