The life of Anna Nicole Smith reinflates at BAM in upcoming Next Wave Festival
The tragic soap opera life of stripper/Playboy playmate/rich man's widow Anna Nicole Smith will launch the NYC Next Wave Festival at BAM as a real opera.
In a U.S. premiere of "Anna Nicole," The New York City Opera will perform seven performances in BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House from Sept. 17 - 28.
Soprano Sarah Joy Miller will play the title role of the pneumatic model, mother and reality TV star who died of a pill overdose in 2007, setting off both a paternity and custody battle over her newborn daughter, and on-going litigation over her estate and that of her pre-deceased husband.
"Thrilled to play this vivacious and voluptuous woman," Miller wrote on her Twitter feed, noting she has been on a "pizza and Pilates" diet to prep for the part.
The lavish "Anna Nicole" production, which premiered at London's Covent Garden in 2011, was composed by Mark-Anthony Turnage and features a libretto by Richard Thomas.
Other productions for the New York City Opera's 2013-2014 season, include Johann Christian Bach's "Endimione," to be held at El Museo del Barrio, Bela Bartok's "Bluebeard's Castle," at St. Ann's Warehouse, and Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at New York City Center, all in 2014.
