Thomas, Christopher lead Calhoun to semis
Jake Thomas had a three-run homer and four RBIs as top-seeded Calhoun beat No. 10 Syosset, 4-0, in Game 2 of a best-of-three Nassau Class AA quarterfinal Thursday.
Joe Christopher allowed two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six scoreless innings for Calhoun (20-1), which advanced to a Class AA semifinal beginning Monday.
Baldwin 4, MacArthur 0: Nick LoBello struck out six in a two-hitter and Danny Capone had a two-run single in the fourth to lead No. 8 Baldwin (12-9) in Game 2 of a best-of-three Class AA quarterfinal. No. 2 MacArthur will host Game 3 Friday at 4:30.
Oceanside 7, Plainview JFK 0: Mike Russ struck out nine in a two-hitter to lift No. 3 Oceanside (16-5) in Game 2 of a Class AA semifinal. Eric Mandel had a two-run double that gave Oceanside a 4-0 lead. Oceanside plays the MacArthur/Baldwin winner in a semifinal Monday at 4:30.
Division 4, South Side 2: JJ Kissane had an RBI triple and Matt Fantorufo added a run-scoring single to give No. 7 Division (15-6) a 4-2 lead in Game 1 of a Class A quarterfinal. Division hosts No. 6 South Side in Game 2 Friday at 4:30.
Island Trees 2, Lynbrook 1: Mike Jeannetti scored on a balk in the bottom of the fourth for No. 3 Island Trees (18-3) in Game 1 of a best-of-three Class A quarterfinal series. Chris Cutrone struck out seven, walked one and scattered six hits in a complete-game win. Game 2 is at 4:30 p.m. Friday at No. 13 Lynbrook.
Oyster Bay 9, Carle Place 3: Robbie Morgan went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Chris Kelly allowed three runs and struck out eight in a complete game to lead No. 1 Oyster Bay (19-1) in Game 2 of a best-of-three Class B semifinal. Oyster Bay will face the winner of the Locust Valley/East Rockaway series in the final Monday at Hofstra.
East Rockaway 14, Locust Valley 0: David Hobbs struck out 10, walked none and gave up three hits in six innings to lead No. 3 East Rockaway (12-10) in the second game of a best-of-three Class B semifinal. Billy Humes and Anthony Tesorio each had three RBIs in the win. No. 2 Locust Valley will host Game 3 Friday at 4 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Long Island Lutheran 11, Portledge 7: Jen Giambrone went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead No. 2 LuHi (14-3) over No. 1 Portledge in the IPPSAL championship game. Both teams advance to the NYSAIS tournament, which begins Saturday.
