Town Focus: A Week in Sayville, Day 5

Newsday's Erin Geismar is on day five of our series, Town Focus: A Week in Sayville.
This morning, I made what’s probably my last stop in Sayville this week at Loughlin Vineyards, where I met owner Barney Loughlin, 86, who has lived on the Meadow Croft Estate for his entire life. We’ll post Barney’s “People of Sayville” interview later today.
Thursday, I spent some time with another lifelong member of the community, John Wells. His family first moved to Sayville in the mid-1800s and Wells has dedicated himself to learning as much about his family history -- and in turn, Sayville’s history -- as he can. We’ll have more about Wells later, as well as a story on the history of Sayville, in recognition of the hamlet turning 250 this year.
Throughout the week, I caught up with members of various organizations, like the Sayville Historical Society, Sayville Public Schools and the Long Island Maritime Museum. I’ve even been stopping people on the street to talk to them about Sayville.
The word I’ve heard used to describe Sayville most often this week is friendly.
That’s been made evident to me especially toward the end of the week, when suggestions for stories to cover and people to profile came pouring in. I won’t get to them all, but just because my “Week in Sayville” is ending doesn’t mean the coverage will.
