Heat wave's over; expect temps in the 80s

Finally, some relief!

The heat wave that roasted the metro area for days ended when a cool front moved in Saturday night. Forecasters expect temperatures Sunday and Monday to be relatively balmy -- dipping from the mid-90s to the 80s.

"We are going to get a little bit of a cool-down," said National Weather Service meteorologist Lauren Nash.

Sunday, highs will be in the mid-to-upper 80s on Long Island, with overnight lows in the mid-60s. "It's going to be a good day to be outside," Nash said.

Monday should be slightly cooler with highs in the low 80s.

The heat wave was capped with a scorcher Saturday. With a high of 95 in Islip, it felt like 100 degrees outside. Nassau County was under a heat advisory.

Thunderstorms passed through the region Saturday night, dumping heavy rain on parts of Connecticut, southeast Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
