Long Island weather: Weekend brings cool temps, chance of rain

Cloudy skies with spotty showers are forecast for the end of Long Island’s workweek, the National Weather Service said.

With daily highs across Nassau and Suffolk counties in the low to mid 50s, Friday also continues a recent trend of cooler than normal temperatures, the service’s Upton office said.

“Our weather pattern holds onto cloudy skies and cooler than normal temperatures through Monday,” News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said.

There’s a slight chance for light rain after 4 p.m. before a rain system moves in overnight, the service said.

Hoffman also said conditions Friday will be breezy, with an east wind at 10 to 15 mph. There will be “some breaks of sunshine” but it’s mostly cloudy and cool, he said.

Daily highs for the weekend will be about 5 to 7 degrees cooler than normal, he said.

Overnight Friday and into Saturday morning the chance for rain increases. There’s a chance for about one-quarter inch of new rainfall through the morning hours, the service said.

Overnight lows are in the low to mid 40s.

There’s some clearing in the morning, and Saturday looks to be partly sunny, breezy and cool again. Daily highs are in the mid to upper 50s.

Cloud increase overnight and give way to Sunday that’s likely be somewhat rainy for the Long Island Marathon. New rainfall amounts could be as much as three-quarters of an inch, and daily highs Sunday stay in the mid 50s.
