Long Island weather: Wednesday offers sunny, dry skies

Wednesday brings dry, mostly sunny skies with high temperatures expected in the low to mid 80s, cooler by the shore.
“Abundant sunshine” is expected for the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
At just before 11 a.m., Long Island MacArthur Airport was reporting a temperature of 80 degrees.
Ocean beachgoers should know that there’s a high risk for rip currents, meaning dangerous, life-threatening conditions for all levels of swimmers, the weather service says. Water temperatures are in the low to mid 60s, and the UV Index is to be very high, meaning unprotected skin can burn quickly.
Wednesday night sees increasing clouds and lows in the 60s, says Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist.
Thursday then takes a turn to the cooler side, with highs in the low 70s, and a 60 percent chance for showers. Look for showers and some thunderstorms to develop in the afternoon, he said.
The rain, though, is nothing to grumble about. The area is “more than two inches below normal in precipitation for the month,” Hoffman says. “Lawns are starting to turn brown.”
Indeed, Long Island is in the U.S. Drought Monitor’s abnormally dry category.
