PSEG Long Island was repairing outages Sunday caused by a Saturday night storm that knocked out power to more than 12,000 customers.

By just after 10 p.m. Sunday, there were only 996 customers without power on Long Island and the Rockaways, according to PSEG’s Long Island outage map.

In a statement Sunday afternoon, PSEG Long Island said the agency continued to make "strong progress, restoring more than 86% of customers affected by yesterday’s thunderstorms. We expect the majority of customers affected by the weather to be restored by tonight."

Service on the Oyster Bay Branch was suspended Sunday as crews repaired utility poles and trees that fell during the storm, according to the LIRR.

"The hardest hit areas include the Town of Oyster Bay, the Town of Hempstead, and the Town of North Hempstead," PSEG wrote in an online message to customers. "We understand how difficult it is to be without electricity, and our crews will continue to work safely and as quickly as possible until all outages are restored."

The Suffolk County Police Department received calls about downed trees in four precincts in the western part of the county, according to a spokesperson from that agency who could not immediately provide further details.

A National Weather Service storm report said on Saturday night, winds of more than 60 mph were recorded in Glen Cove and Eaton's Neck, with winds of more than 40 mph recorded at Orient Point and other places on Long Island. A downed tree on the southbound Bethpage State Parkway was reported at 8:22 p.m. and closed one of the lanes of the two-lane parkway.
