This week's weather will be a bit of a roller coaster ride with temperatures going up and down and a mix of sunny and rainy days, according to the National Weather Service.

"It'll be seasonable on average but variable," said Jay Engle, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Upton. "It'll be a bit of a roller coaster. It'll be a shade above normal today [Sunday] then well above normal on Monday -- and we'll kind of be going up and down."

Engle said the normal highs this time of year for Islip are 52 or 53 degrees and the lows are usually around 36 or 37. Highs for Long Island Sunday will be in the mid-50s with sunny skies with temperatures overnight dipping into the low 40s, Engle said.

"Monday will be sunny and a very nice day with highs in the 60s and lows in the mid- to upper 30s," Engle said. "Then on Tuesday it's cooler and sunny with highs in the upper 40s."

Lows are predicted in the upper 30s, he said.

Wednesday will be partly sunny and mild with highs in the upper 50s but a "40 to 50 percent" chance of showers is forecast for after midnight, Engle said.

"On Thursday showers are likely -- about a 60-percent chance" throughout the day and a 40-percent chance at night, Engle said. Highs again will be around 60 and lows will drop into the upper 50s.

Friday starts off the weekend with mostly cloudy skies "but there could be some peeks of sun," Engle said. There'll be a 40-percent chance of showers throughout the day and lows around 47 are expected at night.
