With no further coastal storms on the horizon, at least at the moment, Friday into the weekend was set to bring cooler-than-normal temperatures with slight chances for precipitation, forecasters said.

High temperatures in the mid-40s were expected for Friday and Saturday — make that around 40 for Sunday, the National Weather Service said. That’s as 49 and 50 degrees are considered normal highs for this stretch at Long Island MacArthur Airport.

Friday brings a slight chance for rain showers before midnight, the weather service said. And, Saturday looks to be mostly sunny, with a slight chance for snow showers overnight into Sunday.

The coming week sees a warm-up, starting around Tuesday, as highs in the upper 40s to mid-50s enter the picture.

Indeed, the temperature was expected to climb well into the 50s Thursday, said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist, adding that it was just in time for the New York Mets home opener that day.

And, even with a week of March yet to go, the month has already been deemed the snowiest at Long Island MacArthur Airport since records started being kept in September 1963.

Thanks to a steady stream of nor’easters, a whopping 31.9 inches of snow has been recorded there as of day-end Thursday. Normal snowfall for that period was 3.7 inches, according to the National Weather Service’s Eastern Region.
