We can start dreaming of a white Christmas, but that may be as close as we get.

There's a slight chance of snow for the holidays, but it's too early to know for sure, a meteorologist said.

David Wally of the National Weather Service said late last night that forecasts now show a 30 percent chance of snow on Friday and Saturday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. But, Wally added, "There's a lot of room for change over the next seven days."

Wally said a cold air mass from Canada and a storm system coming off the Pacific Ocean could collide to produce the snowfall.

A weather service forecaster said earlier Saturday that the week's forecast, including Christmas, was "completely dry."

Temperatures are expected to hover in the upper 30s, slightly below normal, throughout the week, meteorologist Matt Scalora said.

The weather system that slammed states to the south with snow, sleet and ice is going to mostly miss the region this weekend, too, Scalora said.

There's a 20 percent chance of light snow Sunday - and then only east of Westhampton, he added.
