Williams sparks Copiague past Northport
Chelsea Williams had 26 points, nine rebounds and four steals to lead No. 8 Copiague to a 53-47 upset of previously undefeated No. 1 Northport last night in a Suffolk Class AA girls basketball quarterfinal.
Williams hit a driving layup along the baseline to give the Eagles (14-6) a 49-48 lead with 2:22 left, and added four free throws to help seal the victory. Kelly Ann Sullivan added 10 points, Cypher McCloud had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Raven Walker had 10 rebounds.
Chrystal Pope had 17 points for Northport and Stephanie Leon, who dealt with early foul trouble, was held scoreless. Northport finishes the season 18-1. Copiague will face No. 4 Deer Park in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Farmingdale State.
North Babylon 62, Hauppauge 36:Freshman Tamara Simpson had 18 points, 10 rebounds and 13 steals to lead No. 2 North Babylon (20-0) in the Class AA quarterfinals. Charise Wilson added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals. Mary Chisholm had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Sydney Zambrotta had nine points. The Bulldogs will face Sachem East in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Monday at Farmingdale State.
Sachem East 76, Riverhead 45:Meagan Doherty had 23 points, four steals and four assists to lead No. 3 Sachem East (17-3) in the Class AA quarterfinals. Sophomore Ally Drake had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Katie Doherty added 13 points and six assists. Shaniece Allen scored 18 points for Riverhead.
